Scholarships

Sir Apirana Ngata Memorial Scholarship

Māori Trustee administers the Sir Apirana Ngata Memorial Scholarship which aims to promote higher education among Māori. It was created by the Māori Soldiers Trust Act in 1957.

Funding for the scholarship comes from Hereheretau Station, Wairoa, the major asset of the Māori Soldiers Trust.

Scholarships available

Up to 10 scholarships (of up to $5000 each) are available every year for full time study at any tertiary institution, e.g. Polytechnic, Wananga or University.

Application Information

This scholarship is open to all Māori but preference is given to descendants of Māori World War I veterans. Māori World War I veterans are Māori who served overseas during World War I as part of the armed forces of the Crown.

Students may study any field. Selection considers the following:

  • Academic record
  • Demonstrated strong interest in Māori culture
  • Evidence of involvement in cultural and/or community activities
