Lessees

The Māori Trustee adminsters around 100,000 hectares of Māori land on behalf of owners.  Much of this land is leased. Getting the right lessee (the person who leases the land) is a critical part of making sure the land returns benefits to owners, and has a strong, sustainable future.

We are fortunate to work with many lessees who have a clear commitment to the land itself, and who take a long term view of how the land should be managed.

As trustee, we are usually the single point of contact for lessees.  We can also arrange for lessees and owners to meet, for example at an owners’ meeting, or open day on the land, so that owners can hear about the work that is being done on the land.

Our leasing is based on setting fair market rentals and establishing a clear process throughout the term of the lease.
